"Active electrode monitoring should be strongly considered. This device [AEM Laparoscopic Instruments by Encision of Boulder, CO] has a shielding system for electrodes, measures current, and detects insulation faults. The device has been on the market since the mid-1990s but is not widely used. The technology was introduced as money for new equipment began to get tight, and electrosurgical problems did not have high visibility.

Dr. Andrew I. Brill, MD, director of gynecologic endoscopic surgery at the University of Illinois, Chicago] notes that active electrode monitoring solves the problems of insulation failure and capacitive coupling."
